Archive for April, 2009
People often wonder what our volunteers do while they are in Odessa, so here are some first hand details straight from long-time volunteer Lynette Eads, who is currently in Odessa! It looks like Lynette and Linda have been staying busy…
*April 1-2– Travel to Odessa from the U.S.
*April 4-5 — Spent the weekend wandering around Odessa and getting a feel for the city again.
*April 6– Went to the flea market to buy items for Orphanage #4 (100 rolls of toilet paper, folders, etc). Dropped everything off at #4 and then went to Lastochka with Victor and Luda for a craft class.
*April 7– Went to Peter’s church for Day of Ascension. Igor’s vehicle had broken down so their trip to Fontanka was canceled.
*April 8– Peter and Maxim picked them up around 9:00 a.m. and everyone left for Fontanka. Took a tour of the bedrooms, classrooms, and new green house that had been built. The boys had just showered and were getting clean bedding for their beds. The mattresses and beds there are in very bad shape.
*Thursday, April 9– Lynette reports nice weather in Odessa, in the 50’s-60’s. Went to the Shelter with Luda, and brought sweets and juice for the children. Also brought a craft for the kids to do, which they liked very much. Lynette was happy to see many girls and boys knitting and crocheting! The kids there continue to ask for more yarns and crochet hooks.
*April 10– Peter came and picked them up for a trip to Orphanage #4 for a meeting with Svetlana the sewing teacher. Held a crafts class on making beaded bracelets. The kids love working with beads and always ask for more!
*Monday, April 13– Went to Slobodka and did a coloring craft with 15 kids. Had a small luncheon with the head doctor there. Conditions have improved from several years ago, but there are still many needs.
*Tuesday, April 14– Visited Orphanage #34 and took some jeans and donated frisbees for the children. Also brought some beads and art supplies. They asked for beading tools and oil and thread for their sewing machines.
*Wednesday, April 15– Went and purchased a new TV for Alexandrovka. Visited the children there, did a coloring project, and sang songs with Tanya playing the piano. Also visited Orphanage #7 with Luda and Victor. Brought cookies and juice for the kids there. The children “seemed very nice and happy. The caretakers and nurses seemed very caring.” Met and visited with Katya at #7. Lynette wrote, “After seeing her on the blog I was quite impressed with her. She has so many things wrong with her and seemed so open and upbeat.”
*Thursday, April 16– Had a down day, catching up on chores and a bit of walking.
*Friday, April 17– Went to the monthly Scholarship meeting. Visited with students, including some who they have been seeing for several years now!
*Saturday/Sunday, April 18 & 19 – Purchased and helped deliver over 140 Easter breads for #4, #5, and #34. The kids surely liked that special treat! Enjoyed Easter Sunday with the children.
*Monday, April 20– Went to Easter Monday service with Victor and Luda at their church. Very nice, much singing, and almost 3 hours long!
