Healthcare

Healthcare is a major priority of UAC'S Odessa program. The number of institutionalized children is rapidly rising in Ukraine (there area a reported 55,000 orphaned children nationally). The Odessa region hosts thousands of young people with an overwhelming range of medical needs. The Ukrainian economy has left a gaping hole in the heart of healthcare services in Post-Soviet Ukraine. Highly skilled medical professionals have been stripped of the most basic resources. Top surgeons (as well as much of the population) do not get paid a salary for months at a time. Amid such a bleak reality, we have found that a unique relationship of mutual purpose and respect has developed over the years between the Odessa medical community and UAC. We strive to supply meaningful support continually. In turn, the medical facilities give direct attention to the orphaned and displaced children in the region. Many Western medical volunteers have traveled across the world to work with our program. Their specialties have included Dentistry, Psychology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and HIV. UAC has an emergency doctor on staff to respond to the urgent needs of orphans. The picture to the right tells a sad story about a beautiful 11 year old girl named Alya Lisunova. We honor her memory by safeguarding each child with appropriate medical attention.
